Program Description

Graduate Certificate in American Studies

The program provides a graduate level certificate in American Studies, defined as encompassing the United States and the Americas in general. The program includes an entry-level course, a capstone course, and additional hours of graduate level course work (depending on a student's area of specialization) to make up a total of no less than 12 hours and no more than 18 hours.

The program accepts regularly enrolled WSU students and qualified international students who tailor their instruction to their interests and specifications. Students in other graduate programs can work toward a Certificate in American Studies as a way of complementing the specialized knowledge they acquire within their specific degree programs.

Courses for the Certificate in American Studies are offered in the departments of English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Art and Art History, and Romance Languages.  In addition to course work, students participate in a specially designed program by the Detroit Orientation Institute as part of the capstone course, which introduces them to the history, culture, and politics of Detroit and offers the opportunity to engage in a special seminar on US business practices and global leadership.

Admission to requirements for the Certificate Program follow the Graduate School minimum requirements for regular admission.
